That charity shop our friends told us about in the next village is one of the best ever.
It’s unbelievable the number of gems I have found there especially in the book section.
I mean truly, 4 books for £1 can not be bad.
It’s a combination of the competitve prices (above), the fact that we (allegedly) live in a Bible belt and when people are given good books they don’t keep them – you know how it is Sunday School prizes etc.
I picked up these two books recently and added them to JD’s birthday bag.

Escape from the Slave Traders the story of David Livingstone and also Ten boys who changed the world.
Those trailblazer books seem to be quite good, we previously picked up The Hidden Jewel (Amy Carmichael) for our daughter.
In the same shop I spied out these gems

and these

I’m currently reading the little book in the middle picture “If my people” by Dr William Fleming. Dr Fleming is a former minister of one of the Presbyterian churches in our village. In this book Dr Fleming tells the story of the 1958 revival centered in Ahoghill, Northern Ireland. The foreword is written by The Very Rev. Dr. William Craig and he says,
“This book is specially valuable because of its emphasis on the necessity of prayer. It is stressed throughout that invariably before God sends revival He prompts His people to pray, This is the consistent sequence both in the revivals of history and in the more recent movement in Ahoghill. The book is really an impassioned plea for prayer”.
This is a really interesting book for me having been raised in this village and only knowing some of the history of the revival here.
I may interest some of you to know that while googling the 1859 revival in Northern Ireland I came across this interesting piece from our Assembly where after much discussion they appear to agree to 150th Anniversary celebrations within our country. Interesting.

If you’re following along my books category in the bar at the top you will have already noticed that I recently read Disciplines of a Godly Family by Barbara and Kent Hughes.
I read Disciplines of a Godly wife a while back and it’s an equally challenging book. The amazing thing is I borrowed it from our local library. It seems they keep one reformed book in their vast Religious section ;-) This is a really good book, a must read for any family but especially helpful at the early stages.
This book is so Biblical but also very practical, eg it gives ideas for meals, frugal family nights and how to start family traditions. The reference section at the back of this book makes it a good one for the shelf. They recommend books and films for all ages in the family too.
Another good library find.

The last time I asked for help you ladies (and gents) were great. (Incidentally we’re into the second month of the reading roundabout and I’ve already received many good reports of this years books).
At this time of the year I like to purchase a couple of nice books for the kids to present to them with their silly season gifts. I mean the type of book that they will always keep and benefit much from spiritually.
Last year I bought God’s little devotional book for boys for No 1 son and A little girl after God’s own heart for the princess.
These were both good books.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good books for this year.
I’m really not sure what I would like for the 8 year old son but I would be keen on something which touches on Character building. I’ll take any suggestions though.
In the same theme for the almost 6 daughter I was wondering if any of you are familiar with Karen Andreola’s book Beautiful Girlhood? I’m not sure if perhaps it is for an older age-group. Can you recommend anything from your own experience?
Thanks in anticipation.

A while ago I read “Stepping into The Shadows” by Rosemary Sookhdeo – This was a very interesting book which opens up the whole issue of women (including Christian women) converting to Islam.
Sookhdeo steps behind the scenes into the lives of several women who married Muslims or converted to Islam by conviction and reveals what happened to them. She uncovers and analyses the problems and difficulties that such women encounter and address the long term implications of making such decisions.
This book is recommended for all to read and is suitable for giving to those about to marry a Muslim or convert to Islam. I would specifically recommend this very informative book for young ladies heading off to University or relocating from the family home.
This book would be a welcome addition to any church library.
