Cooking & Camping…

August 8, 2007

It’s Wednesday again and over at Shannon’s it’s Works-for-me-Wednesday time again.wfmwheader_162.jpg

Be warned …….. I’m looking for some help ladies………………………..

To-day I’ve got a couple of tips for cooking while camping and I’ve also included a recipe for good measure.

The theme is absolutely nothing to do with the fact we’re heading on a camping trip in just over a weeks time and that’s what’s on my mind…………………………. well ok then that’s not entirely true :-)

The best way to have an enjoyable holiday is to plan all the meals before you go. Most people keep a meal planner anyway so this isn’t anything new. You’re going to have more time to enjoy your holiday if you meals are all planned in advance.

As well as doing this I also take tiny zip-lock bags with many ingredients already measured out and labelled.

Eg. For a Curry recipe I will have the spices all in a bag with the flour. These are all added at the same time in the recipe so it saves you carrying loads of jars of spices with you. I also weigh out portions of rice and pasta for those dishes, to save me taking big boxes and packets with me.

This recipe is ideal for camping as you only use one saucepan:

Chicken & Basmati Rice

2-3 Chicken fillets chopped finely

100mls olive oil,

1 carrot chopped finely

1 tin tomatoes

1 onion chopped

2 chicken stock cubes

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon hot chilli powder

Salt

Basmati Rice.

Heat the olive oil in saucepan, add the onion and spices, salt and chicken stock cube. (Have spices pre-measured salt and combined with 2 stock cubes in a zip-lock bag). Add the chicken and cook, gradually add the tomatoes and the chopped carrots. Allow carrots and chicken to cook then add the rice and some water. When the rice is cooked the dish is ready. This is lovely served with some crusty loaf.

(We like to add more spices to make it hotter but that’s to your own taste).

Time is running out and I haven’t all nights accounted for in my meal planner yet!! - (We will have two gas rings and a grill).
I’d love you to share any camping tips or recipes you have……

It’s never too late……

August 7, 2007

I  gave up my “career” to be a SAHM when the first was born.

I totally believe that’s where I ought to be.

I don’t have a Phd a Bsc or even an OBE.

Actually come to think of it I don’t have an A-level either.

Some times I think I ought to do something about that (Qualifications in general that is, not Phd’s, Bsc’s).

If I’m spared to an age where the kids no longer need me to be here for them, it might be wise to have gathered up some “certificates” on the way. Any of the qualifications I have presently are in the Management/Clerical field and I really don’t see myself wanting back into Management. I’m quite sure I’d only want to work part-time and there are few vacancies in this field for those who want to put their home first.

Anyway as I continue to procrastinate over which courses to take and wonder if I’m just wasting time this encouraged me.

Maybe I should wait a few years yet :-)

Believe it or not…..

August 7, 2007

We had the first of the Swedes last night and even if I say so myself they were mighty good.
As usual there were no batteries in the camera to take a pic so the one over here isn’t mine , I’ll post a pic of the next harvest!images-1.jpeg

We just boiled them, mashed them and fried them in the pan because after all that’s what you do with them isn’t it?

So I’m looking for help again - what do you do with Swedes or Turnips in your house?

I mean by way of in the culinary department, I’m not that interested if you play netball with them ;-)

I’ve got a nice recipe for a vegetarian bake that includes a swede, I’ll post it when I find it but other than that?????

Any ideas?

RTA

August 6, 2007

We weren’t part off the accident but we were undoubtedly first on the scene.

These things are never pleasant.

We were returning home from morning worship. The subject of the sermon was “Spiritual Gifts” we had been challenged to search out our gift.

What had actually happened we may never know but the van had crashed into a house after hitting a tree and a parked car.

The only casualty was the driver who was unfortunately wedged in his seat. He was still conscious which was a blessing as besides adding pressure to his wound really the most help we were able to give him was reassurance.

I’m not a Paramedic.

I’m not a Fire-woman.

Neither have I been given the gift of healing.

The purpose of this post is not to enter into an argument for or against certain of the gifts, but I believe that certain miraculous gifts are no longer available to the Church, even though they were at certain times throughout history, though significantly not all through history; the gift of healing is one them. That does not mean however that God cannot heal, nor that I must not pray for healing, just that I can no longer be a mediator of that gift in the way Elijah or the Apostle Peter were. There are times where such gifts would be somewhat useful such as tongues in missionary work and healing when you come across an RTA, but that’s not God’s plan for us at this stage in redemptive history.

Anyway, it was troublesome to be unable to help someone who so desperately needed my help.

That doesn’t mean I could walk away and say “this isn’t my department”.

I helped with all the First Aid knowledge that came to mind and didn’t vacate the scene until the professionals arrived, that’s the principle of the Good Samaritan in action at least :-)

God is good.

It’s not until it’s all over that you think about the ifs and buts.

If we’d come along a minute sooner the van would have collided with us and not the house but God was in control.

If we hadn’t been there (with the little knowledge we had) others on the scene seemed tempted to move the casualty, contrary to first aid advice but we intervened and advised against this.

To-days advice: Keep up-to-date with a first aid course you never know when you will be the only First Aider at the scene of an accident.

Search out your God given Spiritual gift in the light of scripture, we all have one or more ability given to us by God when we were converted, and then use it as and when you can to help your neighbour, your brother and sister in the Lord, the Church and the Kingdom of Christ, and to the Glory of God.

I’m still searching…….

Can you help a girl out here?

August 3, 2007

OK folks I’m in need of some help here……..images.jpeg

Hubby was threatened coerced to buy one of those quiz sheets that you pay £1 for and feel oh so good that it was all for a good cause (the village improvement committee).

Now you may not be worried about the improvement of our village but if you’re concerned about my frustration at not getting all the answers you’ll have a think to yourself and bribe furnish me with the answers.

They are all Television Game Shows Old and New. I’m presuming they are UK shows because otherwise it would be impossible. Readers outside of the UK - I appreciate your help but don’t worry yourself about my little problems :-)

So I’ve got 4 that I couldn’t get.

Yes 4.

Out of 18 - I didn’t think that was too bad

Anyway..

Unscramble the letters please…

ABBEGIKR

ABDDEILTN

LDNGEBLSAOL

GYWNEIWMA

So there you have it, not that I want you guys to burn the candle at both ends worrying, but you know how it is the answers may just jump right out at you ;-)

Just for the record the ones I did get included Question of Sport, Blockbusters, Telly Addicts, Fifteen to one, Mastermind, Countdown, Family Fortunes, Catchphrase, Blankety Blank (Yea I am old enough), Supermarket Sweep, Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, Weakest Link and Deal or no Deal.

So I’ve tweeked the letters round long enough and I googled Game Shows too but I’m still 4 short.

Let me know if you can shed any light and put me out of my misery

What’s in it for you?

Well if I win the voucher for our local butchers you can have a chicken leg ;-)

In anticipation…..

Local info..

August 2, 2007

For those of you who are locals and I know who you are even if you don’t comment  word gets around! You’re known as a lurker in Blogityville.

Where was I -

Yes if you’re like me and love books, I just wanted to let you know about the book sale the NEELB are having.

Click here for more information - these sales are an excellent way of building up your own library. Books will be available on all subjects as well as Videos and Audio Books.

All items on sale are ex-library and are generally in good condition. The last time this sale was on we waited till the last day of the sale and the books were being sold at £5.00 per box of books for non-fiction and £2.50 per box of books for fiction and childrens. (The prices are still very good at the beginning of the sale too).

You just never know what little gems you might find.

If you’re not so local sorry this information is of little relevance to you - do check out what your local library does with it’s old stock though - 2 tips in 2 days this blog is really going places. ;-)

Now in return a nice polite comment, no-one will contact you trying to sell double-glazing. I promise.

Parenting Advice….

August 1, 2007

wfmwheader_162.jpg This week Shannon is hosting “The great Parenting Advice Edition” of her Works-for-me-Wednesday carnival. I’m sure there will be lots of great advice given out.

For me, I’m not going to come up with some token piece of advice to make life easier, I’ve got a long way to go with our clan to be giving out advice to those who have more experience than me. What I will recommend though to all Christian Parents or Christians hoping to be parents is this book.

51jwzxetb2l_aa240_.jpg

Successful Christian Parenting by John MacArthur.

This book is not a new “method” of parenting. Neither is this a book on child psychology. Rather, it presents the time-proven principles of biblical parenting clearly and carefully to help parents make sense of their duties before God and to bring up their children in the ways of the Lord.

If you are striving to raise your children in the fear and admonition of the Lord this is a truly Biblical resource. I have read this book on 3 occasions, now that I’ve taken it off the shelf again and checked out the contents I feel the need to read it again.

I hope this advice can be of some use to Godly parents who wish to raise their children with “care, compassion and common sense”.

******* Note added to inform you that the above book is also known as What the Bible says about Parenting? I believe my copy is an earlier edition before the name and cover were up-dated.
